Join ALLMEP as we recognize and honor the incredible contributions of women peacebuilders ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8

The United Nations began commemorating International Women’s Day in 1975. By 1977, the United Nations General Assembly and its member countries had declared March 8 as an official UN holiday for women’s rights, gender equality and world peace. This recognition was more fully realized in 2000, when the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) formally acknowledged it through the creation of Resolution 1325.

The resolution specifically addresses how women and girls are disproportionately impacted by violent conflict and war and recognizes the critical role that women can and already do play in peacebuilding efforts. UNSCR 1325 affirms that peace and security efforts are more sustainable when women are equal partners in the prevention of violent conflict, the delivery of relief and recovery efforts and in the forging of lasting peace.

Over the next few weeks, ALLMEP will be shining a spotlight on the contributions of Palestinian and Israeli women working together to build peace. From activists, to movements, to NGOs, ALLMEP will highlight quotes, demonstrations, and negotiations led by women.

Our members, Women Wage Peace, Women of the Sun, Itach Ma’aki, Tomorrow’s Women, Jerusalem Center for Women, Mahapach Taghir, Tech2Peace, Parents Circle Families Forum, and so many others have women-focused programs that support the work of women peacebuilders in the region. Stay tuned to learn more about their work.
