Read the latest updates from ALLMEP member Sikkuy

In March of 2016, Sikkuy, along with extraordinary support for the New Israel Fund, introduced the Arab Media Representation Index, and analysis of Arab participation in Hebrew news programs. Through this project, Sikkuy identified the dearth of Arab voices in discussing contemporary Israeli matters. When Arabs were invited as panelists, it was usually relegated to topics involving “conflict” rather than art, business growth, or cultural items. By illuminating this imbalance of voices, Sikkuy hopes to provide both subtle pressure and inspiration to Israeli radio and television broadcasters about engaging in more even handed discussions about the region. The Index published its findings each week, and Sikkuy proudly asserts that the Arab presence on such programs has increased tremendously. However, more work is to be done. Therefore, Sikkuy has intensified its relationship with The Seventh Eye publishing, and are encouraging all significant Israeli television and radio corporations to insist upon Arab voices on all programs relating to the region. One can find work from the Seventh Eye at Sikkuy believes that it is vital for Israelis to hear from Arabs to gain unique perspectives that expand beyond stereotypical concerns about violence. Numerous Hebrew media outlets have requested help in identifying the best Arab minds for appearances on various programs, and thus Sikkuy created the “A-List” database, a compilation of over two hundred popular interviewees. In an effort to promote cross-cultural dialogue, Sikkuy is hosting a conference at Tel Aviv University on April 3rd. The event, held in conjunction with The Friedrich Ebert Foundation, The Seventh Eye, and the Tel Aviv University’s Department of Communications, will explore the best practices for ensuring Hebrew voices discussing Arabs topics.
